The installation software on the CD did not work, say that there is a file named hpzrein01 failed. After I managed to 168Mb software from HP website, the problem there. I tried two different laptops (Windows XP) and the problem was the same. In the end I managed to only the drivers without the full software.The scans are horribly done. I wanted to use it to take pictures, but it keeps on scanning of the lid with the receipt for the negatives. This means that I have to harvest image to view the actual size photo. In addition, the scan was super slow, I can not believe that this product actually came from the market.I’m sorry, but who at HP that the green light for this product should come up for another job. Customer Review: REAL POWER IN A LITTLE PACKAGE!
This little thing can easily scan mountains of pages in short order and do it with clear easy to read reproduction. I don’t know how Canon gets so much into this rather narrow case. I highly recommend the unit. And once you adjust the paper thickness control it will just keep scanning as long as you keep putting pages into the unit. The software allows you the option of continuing to scan once all loaded pages are finished so you can just keep adding to the same file. What’s more the unit is TWAIN compatible which means you can use any software application such as Adobe Standard 8 to scan directly from this unit. As long as the software is TWAIN compliant your in. If you can take a file folder out of your file cabinet then you can scan it into your computer with this unit. It’s that easy. Get one yourself and you’ll see how easy it is to go paperless.
Customer Review: Flaw product - avoid it!
Every time I have to use this scanner, it is a nightmare. The worst: the paper feed. Canon rates 50 pages that you can put into the feeder. That is far from the truth. 3-5 is the max! If paper is folded or crumpled, you have to feed sheet after sheet and push it down manually.
Scanning photos does not work, since you have feed each one individually.
The wobbly paper feed does not allow to scan pages straight - ugly black rims remain on all sides.
The software is buggy, e.g. printing larger scans does simply not work. The menu structures are twisted and not user friendly.
I don’t understand the good ratings here. According to my experience, this is a product to stay away from.

Customer Review: Far Exceeded My Expectations!
You can still get this scanner new at eBay or at some camera places. I got it solely because I wanted a film scanner, but could not afford a “real” one. Flatbed scanners are considered inferior for such things. Well, if this scanner is making inferior scans of negatives or slides, I can’t tell! I think they are wonderful. It even has the FARE system, which is usually found on more expensive models. The software bundle has loads of photo software, as well as an OCR program. I have used the OCR program once…there were too many words it couldn’t read…and I could have typed up the article faster than proofreading the mistakes.But I have not read up on everything yet, mainly because there is no printed manual, only a Quick Start Guide. But at least the QSG tells you more than most. It’s still confusing at times, though. Even things I’ve done before can be confusing to repeat. It’s just not the easiest software on the face of the Earth.But as I said, it scans negatives and slides beautifully, as well as photos. It does far better with photos than my HP All-In-One. It should, however, since it is a photo/film scanner.And it’s a nice priced one at that!

Bad qualities:
As the buyer from CA (Jan 11, 2004) stated, the power must be cycled on this scanner from time to time. Save your scans frequently, because after ten scans or so - the software may give error codes & hang. After reading the documentation & checking Canon’s web site, I’ve found nothing that remedies this problem.
Good qualities:
The scanner is great for the price range it retails in. I highly recommend it for slide scanning & platen images. I don’t recommend it for scanning negatives - it takes a few tries to scan each negative which is unacceptable for me.
Speed & reliability:
Speedy USB 2.0 interface & decent looking device. Above average scanner. After six months, it still functions as new - which is very important in today’s low price provides low quality type of marketplace.

Customer Review: best item I own had it 16 years
I use it in B/W only for economy. It takes a larger size catridge in Black only mode. I have refilled my cartridges for almost ten years with no harm. When a road warrior I put it in its factory carton and put it in the back seat of car. Its light enough to pick up with one hand. I have never had to service it! Does it get any better? I use it with low volumes but it is very transportable and handy. I have downloaded and installed software many times for new computers or whatever. I don’t look forward to it, but it’s not so bad. I am sure one can order a DVD from canons web page. The one who dislikes this machine the most is Canon. That’s because it just keeps running and I wouldn’t trade it for any of their heavier more expensive units which is all they offer now. Don’t believe refilling cartridges causes harm Manufacturers are now designing cartridges that will self destruct the first time empty. Canon has no drivers for VISTA. I didn’t use it for volume but rather availability. I never used it to fax, but rather scanned and emailed to J2Fax service. I would not chosse this machine for high volume use…the print pool on a 10-20 person office.

I have had this printer for three years now and it has been nothing but trouble from day 1! If it’s not the alarm light going off then it is skipping lines while printing. The fax machine is no better. “Best of all” Canon is nooooo help whatsoever. Their drivers don’t work. I have had to reistall drivers tons of times, all to no avail. DO NOT BUY!!!!

I’m no computer guru or even all that savy with computers. That might also help why I didn’t have any problems. I am using most of this printers capabilities, faxing, scanning, accessing it wirelessly and more. I will give another feedback in a few months, but for now, I am very happy with this printer. After 20+ hours on the phone with tech support we had them send out a replacement, which has exactly the same problems, and I think the problem is their terrible software. Its software locks up the host machine at 100% processor use, the scanning is very poor quality when it works, which is seldom, and the printing locks up with random “49 error”. It does send and receive faxes ok. I have an office full of HP equipment, and we had ok results with the earlier LJ3330 and LJ3380 models, but this is trash. Customer Review: I wish I could give zero starsIt is now August of 2008 and I still can’t scan with this device which is not compatible with Windows Vista and there is no evidence that it will ever work.
